2012-06-14 Around the Yard

I've decided that this is really Bletilla 'Yokohama', the hybrid of striata and formosana, rather than pure formosana. So I planted it.

My Calochortus clavatus is gorgeous.

I like this new little Digitalis obscura I found at a local nursery. It has sharp, evergreen linear leaves like a bromeliad.

I put the Epipactis gigantea in the bog. It's not gigantic yet: it's less than a foot tall!

Eremurus 'Cleopatra' is starting to open.

A nice Lilium pardalinum from a friend. My own seed grown plants, started in 2008 or 2009, are going to have their first flowers this year too.
Photobucket

Some Eriophyllum lanatum that I started from seed from Southern Oregon in 2010. Really filling in.

A Peony that came with the house.

Penstemon cardinalis from Hardy Plant sale.
Photobucket

Penstemon eatonii, from seed.
Photobucket

Penstemon fructescens, from seed from Mt Hood.
Photobucket

A little Primula capitata mooreana.

The Sarracenia rubra jonesii are blooming well in the bog. I bought most of my Sarracenia in 2006 or so: an oreophila, a rubra, a rubra jonesii, a leucophylla and then later a flava cuprea. These 6 year old plants grew into a bog-full!

2012-06-09 Stuff I've seen on walks recently

I've been going on hour or two walks lately now that the rains have mostly abated... except for the occasional June downpour. Here are some random phone shots of the neighborhood flora.

A nice crinkly Cistus with nice dark leaves.

I like the "country garden" look sometimes. Lots of summer color and a full appearance.
Photobucket

I also like it when people have a definite theme to their gardens: Bees and blues. This garden was definitely abuzz because of all of the lavender.
Photobucket

Chionanthus is not a common tree around here. This is the only one I've seen within a few mile radius. No scent.
Photobucket

This Cerinthe major purpurescens has lots of interesting colors. This picture is a little washed out but the colors are pretty accurate, if you've never seen one in person.

A local landscaper, with a very nice yard, even has an old Embothrium coccineum planted! I love turning the corner and noticing something totally interesting that I have walked past a dozen times before without noticing. Perspicacity: we has it.

At the Rhododendron Species Botanic Garden, Meconopsis were quite blue. This was taken during Memorial Day weekend.

Here is the Meconopsis meadow with Cardiocrinum giganteum almost ready to bloom this year!

Here is a Cardiocrinum that someone in my neighborhood had blooming! Good work. I've tried these in pots and failed. This person just had it planted in clay and it somehow did this...

Last, a nice sunset.
